How To Get The Most Out Of Your Guitar Lessons

Once you find a great guitar teacher, you want to get the most out of your lessons right? Of course you do! So many guitar players take lessons but don’t get the maximum benefit from it. Don’t make this same mistake only to end up wasting your time and money. Working with a guitar teacher has the potential to skyrocket your progress, so take full advantage of it!

Here are several great ways to get more from your guitar lessons so you can become a better player in less time:

Tell Your Teacher About Your Musical Goals

The first step to becoming a better guitarist is to map out your goals as clearly as possible. This gives you an idea of what you need to work on to improve. The best part about working with a great guitar teacher is they understand the most effective route to take for achieving any given musical goal.

After you tell them your goals, they will help you break them down into smaller goals that you will achieve over time. This makes progress more motivating as you see yourself getting better and better. A guitar teacher helps you reach your goals by giving you a custom made strategy that meets your personal needs and addresses your strengths/weaknesses.

Practice On Your Own

It is nearly impossible to make a lot of progress on guitar if you only practice during your weekly guitar lesson. Take your guitar playing seriously and practice every day between lessons. You don’t need to practice 5 hours every day, simply practice with 100% focus.

Practice What Your Teacher Says (Exactly How He Says To Do It)

Many guitar students do not actually practice in the way their teacher has told them. This mistake is counterintuitive to why you take lessons in the first place. Remember, you are taking guitar lessons with a teacher because their expertise helps you improve faster than you would on your own. It is absolutely vital that you listen to them and practice exactly as they tell you.

Bottom line: practice how your guitar teacher tells you, and get results in your playing.

Ask Questions To Get Feedback

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand lesson materials you are given. Many guitarists are afraid of looking stupid by asking questions… but this fear holds them back from getting better! Know that good guitar teachers want to see you get better as fast as possible, and are glad to help you with any question you have. Additionally, when you express that you are struggling with something, it gives your teacher the opportunity to correct any underlying issues in your playing/mindset that you may not have even noticed.

Ask Your Teacher About Learning In Groups

Learning in private 1 to 1 lessons can be very effective. However, when you learn guitar with a teacher in group formats, you open the door to improving your playing/musicianship in many new ways. Playing guitar with other people helps you develop skills you wouldn’t develop otherwise. For example, learning to improvise over someone else’s accompaniment, learning how to play “tight” rhythm in a group, and overcoming any anxiety that comes with playing in front of others.

When you apply these 5 concepts into your guitar playing, you are guaranteed to get better faster during your lessons.
